Banyan Trees

© Gregory Hochman

The below Banyan tree photos are part of my first tree photo shoot.  These trees are the very inspiration that motivated me to buy a digital camera and begin shooting art-trees.  I fell in love with banyans the moment I saw them.  I was blown away and delighted by their  root system and animated forms.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of tree species that are great subjects for art, yet banyans may be the grand ultimate.  Their forms and functions are unique beyond human imagination.  They grow wider than a house and  serve as mansions for many creatures.  It is even said that the entire army of Alexander the Great once camped under a single banyan tree.

Unlike most trees, which have one main trunk that grows upward and in girth, the banyan has a unique root system that allows the entire tree to grow wider and outward.  The banyan roots provide the tree with an engineering or architectural system, which allows the tree to grow very large while simultaneously creating highly artistic forms.
